Laurie's Beads
Working with materials that inspire her creativity, Swarovski crystals, freshwater pearls, semi precious stones, metal and resin, Laurie combines materials for finished pieces that can be either contemporary or traditional.
Trained at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Architecture as an Interior Designer she incorporates her design sensibility into each piece. This seasons theme "Journey and Reflection" have inspired a series of larger sculptural pieces in resin in combination with elements of her jewelry.
She began making jewelry after an accident that caused her to be off her feet in the evening after a full day at work. She says that nothing keeps you still like a laptop full of beads, and of course a cat who doesn't seem to mind holding up a beadboard or tool or two!
Creating a piece of jewelry in an evening was both therapeutic, and solved a need for her to see a finished piece relatively instantly. As a commercial Interior Designer whose projects might take years to complete, jewelry making satisfied that need and allowed her to explore colour and material combinations not possible in her design work.
Laurie loves colour, pattern and sparkle. Some works are about the unique colour combinations, others are informed by shape and simplicity. Shiny sparkly creations are also featured. She picks up a bead and likes to see the magic in the material. Looking outside the window at her cottage studio you can see the influence that the lake and the sky have had on her work.
Please stop by her lakeside cottage studio "Moonglow" whose location continues to inspire her pieces!
